A short story of some Community Energy Pitfalls

A short story of some Community Energy Pitfalls

A couple of years ago a Community Energy pioneer changed his focus from the Vale of Glamorgan to Cardiff. This was borne out of years of frustration with his local council and also the apparent willingness of the Welsh capital to embrace renewable energy. Strategic documents stated clearly that there was a desire to work in partnership with community groups to help develop projects across the city. Great news and a real positive step forward as far as pioneers are concerned. The dormant Cardiff Community Energy (CCE) Co-operative was resurrected with its original members and the hard work began.

Prince Charles: To limit climate change we will need to see profound changes

As you are all very well aware, even if many others may not be, 2015 is a vital year for the future of humanity. Targets, plans and timetables being agreed this year, in Addis Ababa, New York and Paris, will be absolutely critical in ensuring peoples' and Nature's long-term health, wealth and security. So we must all hope and pray for the right outcomes.

If We Dig Out All Our Fossil Fuels, Here's How Hot We Can Expect It to Get

If We Dig Out All Our Fossil Fuels, Here's How Hot We Can Expect It to Get

Michael Greenstone, New York Times.

World leaders are once again racing to avert disastrous levels of global warming through limits on greenhouse gas emissions. An agreement may be in reach, but because of the vast supplies of inexpensive fossil fuels, protecting the world from climate change requires the even more difficult task of disrupting today's energy markets.

The White House last month released a blueprint to reduce United States emissions by as much as 28 percent by 2025. The plan lays the groundwork for the formal international climate talks this December in Paris, where the goal is a treaty on emissions that will seek to limit the rise in global temperatures to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above preindustrial levels. Beyond 3.6 degrees, scientists say, the most catastrophic climate consequences will occur, possibly including the melting of the Greenland ice sheet.

Forging a treaty in Paris would be no small task, yet would be just the beginning of a solution. The greater challenge will be deciding how much of the world's abundant supply of fossil fuels we simply let lie. (Bill McKibben and more recently The Guardian have taken a maximal position in their Leave It in the Ground campaign.)

An increasing number of local governments is setting ambitious renewable energy targets to combat human induced climate chaos. At the ICLEI World congress in Seoul, Korea, the group warns that future energy markets built on 100% renewable energy have to be 'people centered' and 'community driven'.

Heat pumps extract warmth from ice cold water

Heat pumps extract warmth from ice cold water

By Richard Anderson

Business reporter, BBC News

The residents of Drammen have rather an unusual way of keeping warm, the BBC have reported today.

The county capital, 40 miles west of Oslo in Norway, extracts most of the heat needed to insulate its houses, offices and factories against the biting Nordic cold from the local fjord, or more precisely from the water held within it.

Averaging 8C throughout the year - it's literally cold enough to take your breath away. So cold, in fact, that open water swimmers classify it as freezing.

But somehow, an open-minded district heating company, backed by an environmentally-conscious city council, together with a large measure of Glaswegian nous, have built a system to meet the heating needs not just of Drammen's 65,000 residents, but its businesses as well.

The first straw houses in the UK to be offered on the open market are on sale.

By Victoria Gill

Science reporter, BBC News

Though straw walls might be most readily linked to a story of pigs making questionable construction choices, the team behind these homes says the material could help to sustainably meet housing demand.

The homes are the result of an engineering research project led by the University of Bath.

The researchers worked with specialist architectural firm Modcell.

The team says this development should move building with straw from a niche technique for the ecologically minded to the wider market.

Monmouthshire Eco Open Doors

Monmouthshire Eco Open Doors

Visit local homes and other properties, old and new to find out how to save energy, generate your own, and save money.

The second Monmouthshire Eco Open Doors takes place on the weekend of April 27th and 28th 2013. Twenty seven properties will be opening, ranging from a school, a community allotment project, a church, a village hall, new eco-houses, and older houses that have been retro-fitted to make them more eco-friendly.

Property owners will be available to talk to you about their own experience of having energy saving and energy generating features installed, and what it's like to live with them. This year, installers will also be present at some properties to provide more technical information and give advice on whether the technologies will be suitable for your property.

Pick up a leaflet, which provides details of all the properties except Chepstow Methodist Church which is only on the website, and have a look at the map on this site to plan which places to visit during the weekend.

We value your feedback. If you have any comments about the event, or would like to open next year please email us: events@monecoopendoors.org.uk
