Welsh Government statement on allotments and community growing consultation
On 27 January, Minister for Natural Resources Carl Sargeant AM issued the Welsh Government’s response to the consultation on the availability of land for allotments and community gardens in Wales.
On behalf of our members, we issued a passionate and comprehensive response to the consultation, which closed in October 2014. In his response, the Minister stated that it was his intention to create Wales-wide guidance for community growers, land owners and local authorities to help improve the availability of allotments and community gardens and allow more people to enjoy the benefits of being involved in community growing.
One of the major announcements in the statement is that the Welsh Government will seek to find a way to improve waiting lists arrangements for allotments and providing information on existing community growing projects – helping to remove barriers preventing new community growing groups from starting up.
The new guidance, which will also contain recommendations on improved processes for registering interest in allotments and community gardens, will be released later this year with the support of FCFCG and the Community Land Advisory Service.

South East Wales Regional Gathering – Newport, 24 February
The first South East Wales regional gathering of 2015 will be held at the beautiful Tredegar House in Newport, host to two very different but equally impressive community growing projects.
The day will include tours of both Growing Spaces, a mental health charity with gardens and Duffryn Community Allotment, both based at Tredegar House. Also on the bill will be the chance to learn from our speakers about how you can to run, host, and access training, and about sharing skills in the community.

Seeing is believing - travel bursaries available
Don’t forget that Tyfu Pobl can offer travel bursaries of up to £150 for community growers to visit other projects, and £50 to the project they visit. There is no better way to learn and grow than by seeing a project in action and speaking to the people who make it happen. Email us at wales@farmgarden.org.uk if you’re interested in visiting a project.

Wassailing away
In January, Conwy Orchard held their annual Wassail event. Wassailing is a traditional ceremony that involves singing and drinking the health of the trees, awakening them from their winter slumber and scaring away evil spirits in the hope of a better harvest come Autumn.
Conwy Orchard are also looking for support for a number of work party days in February and March to carry out pruning and clearance. If you can help, head along on:
  • Saturday 7 February 10.30
  • Sunday 22 February 10.30
  • Saturday 7 March 14.00

Seed Swaps
When activity in the garden quietens down over the winter months, it’s time to take stock and plan what you’ll be growing for the 2015 season.
Seed swaps are a great way to get your hands on the seeds you need and meet fellow green-fingered sorts to share knowledge and experience.
Check out these seed swaps coming up across Wales in February and March. Click on the links below to find out more:
Community Land Advisory Service Cymru

We want to support you in to the new growing season so please get in touch: email us at wales@communitylandadvice.org.uk
