Farewell to Katie Jones, Wales Development Manager

The end of March saw the departure of Wales Development Manager, Katie Jones. You can read Katie's farewell message here. The Federation would like to thank Katie for all she has contributed our organisation, the projects we work with and the community growing movement in Wales.

Pembrokeshire Community Growing network Event, 7 June

This event will be an opportunity for those involved with community growing in Pembrokeshire to come together, find out what others are doing and share experiences. For more information and to book your place go to the events page.

"Back to the Land", 13 May, Wrexham

CLAS are excited to announce the first in a series of free, land based events. “Back to the Land” will cover different aspects of accessing and getting hold of land for community growing projects.  This free event will be an opportunity to learn more about accessing land, meeting like-minded people and hearing from the experts.  For more information and to book go to the FCFCG website.

Do you have land that you would like the community to use for growing? Do you own land that the local community grow on? Are you a group of people wanting to know how to go about obtaining land for community use?

The CLAS Cymru travel bursary could be what is required.
The travel bursary allows knowledge sharing between all parties involved in community growing on land; from the landowner, to the community group and to related support agencies and other interested parties such as planners.
Please contact wales@communitylandadvice.org.uk for more information.

Funding news

Do you have good quantities of products, produce or reliable services that you are looking for markets to sell to?  Over the coming months we will be exploring the process of bidding for public sector contracts and how it may work for consortia bids (i.e. a group of community organisations coming together to be able to share in the delivery of a contract) .  ‘Procurement’ is the purchase of works, goods or services from a third party supplier. This is a commercial transaction under a legally enforceable contract. The supplier is contractually obliged to deliver whatever it has been hired to do.

Each year the public sector in Wales buys a vast amount of goods and services from external sources - this is currently estimated at £5 billion plus per annum. This may include basic supplies to specialist services or paying contractors to provide services to customers on its behalf.  However only 45% of this money is spent in Wales. Welsh public sector bodies are being encouraged to spend more in Wales.

The tendering process is not easy but social enterprises are being encouraged to learn about what they need to consider in order to tender. Free training on “an introduction on how to tender” is available at locations throughout Wales.

The WCVA also has produced information sheets about contracts and tendering.

If you would like to have a chat about tendering please get in touch withkatie.trent@farmgarden.org.uk  (NB: Katie generally works Tuesdays and Wednesdays)

Benefits for FCFCG Members

If you haven’t filled in your form to become a member of the Fed then you won’t know about our fantastic new discount seeds offer for FCFCG Members.

As part of our commitment to increase benefits for our members, the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens has teamed up with Kings Seeds to offer some great discounts exclusive to FCFCG members.

Kings Seeds was established more than 125 years ago and is now the oldest independent wholesale horticultural seed merchant in the UK. The company is keen to support community farming and gardening and has agreed to offer substantial discounts on its normal prices. Currently there are two offers available:

Seeds Orders - A 45 percent discount promotion to FCFCG members on orders of seeds over £35. These are plain-packet seeds for use by the member group themselves.

Seed Display Stands - A 50 percent discount on seed display stands, similar to those seen in garden centres. Members of FCFCG buy colourful, pictorial seed packets direct from Kings at half the recommended price and use an on-loan display stand to offer them for sale to customers.

There will also be further member only offers available soon, so if you aren’t already a member then do join us. Go towww.farmgarden.org.uk/join to download a membership form
