Let's Generate RCT
Communities in Rhondda Cynon Taff are to benefit from targeted funding and support on energy efficiency and energy generation over the next 18 months. This could lead to savings on energy bills and the creation of income streams which could net over £20million for communities over the next 20 years and help to save over 20,000 tonnes of carbon. These are the findings of the Generate RCT report compiled by Interlink, the Voluntary Sector Council for Rhondda Cynon Taff.
Since the launch of this report at the Energy in the Community Event in July Interlink has secured an additional £16,000 for towards a £75,000 programme to carry out feasibility studies on around 30 micro-hydro sites across RCT with potential to generate an annual income of £350,000 for communities in RCT.
Over the same period 12 community buildings in RCT have benefitted from energy audits from a Coalfields Regeneration Trust programme aimed at making Community Buildings within the former Coalfield areas of Wales more energy efficient and sustainable. The programme is now in its’ second stage to secure capital investment to implement the recommendations from the energy audits.
‘Rising energy costs are a growing concern for community groups and in working with them we have identified a need for investment to help ensure that they can keep their running costs down,’ said Sian Sykes of The Coalfields Regeneration Trust.
Interlink will be running 3 events in the year to provide community groups with the opportunity to find out more. “We will be looking at how community groups can transform their community buildings by focusing on energy saving measures and income generation through renewable energy generation and we’ll be launcing the RCT Community Hydro map and exploring how community groups can get involved in these exciting opporunties”, said Ken Moon, Social Enteprise Officer.
