Green Village is one of four future facing tours in the county. Others are the Fishguard Phoenix where businesses with difference are defying inner town die-off, the Deep Tour of the Gwaun Valley with spirituality and microbreweries in abundance, the Grandiose one to see millionaires and public bodies' great works, and the Newport neighbourhood ramble. The Newport ramble on 7th is full.

Ty Solar from Western Solar is the first stop on the tour on Monday 28th September.

Ty Solar is the brain child of Glen Peters of Rhosigilwen,
Constructed of local materials, prefabricated in a factory converted from a barn near the mansion. TySolar needs a twelfth the energy of a standard home, the roof is made of PV, it is affordable and  The first village now being built will be for rent to locals. Glen Peters is our tour host at this stop. They approach passive house standard, and local craftsmanship is a speciality - just try the windows! There are box timber beams of local wood and Welsh waste paper insulation - 80% of the materials are very local or from Wales.

Next stop is Canolfa Hermon, the hall created by its community, inspired by Cris Tomos, The story of how this beautiful green community hall got built in this little village is epic. Cris, who tells it, won the top UK social entrepreneur award. This is also a refreshment break in the little cafe newly opened in the hall.

Then we drive a little way (or walk if we want) to visit Charlie and Megan's home, Pwll Broga. This is the 'hobbit home' of national fame. It has just won its appeal against demolition. It is one of those homes to die for, built by a young local couple and their friends for under £15,000. Everything is hand crafted but with the space and appliances of modern life. The couple built on his parents farm when they were expecting their son, they earn their living through crafts and fruit production.  Their battle to survive has awoken a generation to what is possible. You may well want to buy a souvenir with a story here.

Finally we go to next door ecovillage, Lammas. This is the first and so far only ecovillage in the country. It got permission under a unique Welsh policy, One Planet Development. It is nine 5 acre small-holdings and a central hub. You will see the variety of self-built homes and ways of earning a living from the plots. The village has just past its five year trial period and proved that people can indeed live sustainably from the land and the elements. The power comes from a river and small PV. The central hub is where we will end, to chat, take refreshments and provide feed-back.

Looking forward. Trip estimated time 11am - 3.30 pm Instructions when you book
